Can I Really Hear God?

by Ron & Tonia Woolever

The Bible makes it clear that our God communicates!

While He can and will make his thoughts known to anyone he pleases, Jesus assures believers that His sheep — those who belong to God — will know His voice.

Yet many Christians struggle to believe they can hear God, or are afraid to try. Hearing God seems intimidating, and for some, presumptuous. Yet it is God’s idea, so we know this is His desire and plan.

Tonia and her husband, Dr. Ron Woolever, wrote Can I Really Hear God? to help Christians learn to hear God in everyday life. This small but powerful book is packed with Scriptures validating God’s will in this matter. Full of pointers on how to develop what Jesus called “ears to hear,” this book is a great primer and reference on the subject.

Listening ear

Like all relationships, knowing God can only happen through authentic communication. Hearing God’s voice is the privilege of every born-again child of God. Communication with Him is key to experiencing the great promises of the New Covenant of Jesus:

  • Being personally taught by God.
  • Experiencing the Lord’s unfailing love, guidance and comfort.
  • Abundant life as sons and daughters of God learning to walk in His character, fruitfulness and power.

All babies are born with the capacity to hear and speak, yet they don’t begin to do it right after birth. These faculties must be developed as they grow. This is just as true for the relationship you have with God as your human spirit relates to His Spirit. He created your new, born-again spirit with the capacity to know His thoughts, to know what He desires and perceive what He is doing. You only need the Holy Spirit’s assistance, faith to believe in His indwelling presence, and the habit of being attentive to that presence.

This book will teach you:

  • Why you need to hear God’s voice
  • The biblical evidence that you can
  • Practical steps to developing “ears that hear”
  • Hindrances to hearing God

Proverbs 3:32b says of the Lord,

He is intimate with the upright.

In God’s dictionary, the “upright” are those who belong to Him and sincerely want to walk with Him. “Upright” is not a synonym for “perfect.” Plus, the Hebrew word translated here as “intimate” is pictured by two people sitting on a couch in intimate conversation!

God WANTS to communicate with you. He doesn’t want you to guess what He wants, how He feels, or the wise way to handle your issue. He LOVES to mentor, teach, and personally comfort His children. In fact, without this you will never enjoy the full life with God Jesus promised to believers. If you don’t learn to perceive God’s voice, you can easily end up living as a lonely, insecure orphan instead of the beloved child of God you truly are.

Only through communicating with God can Christians effectively fulfill the purpose for which they were created. That is, to truly know their God, walk with Him on earth, and reveal Him in truth to the world. This is the calling of every Christian. You will accomplish a fraction of what is possible if you try to live only by the written Word of God.

Bottom line: the Bible says you can and must know His voice! Here is the basic difference: you can constantly remind yourself that Jesus loves you — or hear Him whisper it just when you need to hear it.

Can I Really Hear God? will teach you everything you need to know to begin this journey of communicating daily with the Lord. Buy it in Tonia’s Book Store or in the Shammah Ministries store on Amazon.com, where it is also available as a Kindle ebook.
