Anointed For The Ordinary

The words anointed and ordinary seem kind of odd together, right?

After all, the anointing — the grace, ability, power of the Holy Spirit — is what enabled Jesus and His apostles to do wonders of every kind. But don’t assume the anointing is something only given to such extraordinary ones and those in “ministry.”

The grace, ability, power of the Holy Spirit is available as much for you in the ordinary roles in life as it is for the extraordinary ones. I like to call it the “kitchen sink anointing” because that’s where I often need it the most as a housewife. Not to do dishes, but the ability to be effective in my whole life. To be a godly wife. To make good parental decisions. To love a husband well, even when he acts like a jerk. And a lot of that seems to happen in the vicinity of the kitchen sink!

Apostle Peter wrote:

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

2 Peter 1:2-3 (NIV)

Beloved, this wasn’t just written for people in ministry. You need the anointing/ grace of the Spirit to know and reveal the Lord in every aspect of life. I explained in The Woman God Designed:

“The word which is translated “grace” in our Bibles is the Greek word charis, the same word translated as the gifts and anointing the Holy Spirit gave Jesus and the apostles. We tend to think of anointing or spiritual gifts in connection with dramatic abilities for public ministry. But God’s grace is an inward supply of his strength and ability to carry out all the decisions we are asked to make in order to please him and carry out his will. We need God’s grace so much that the Apostle Paul began and ended each of his letters with a prayer for the reader to receive it!

“If you choose to obey God wholeheartedly, you will quickly discover two things: how desperately you need Jesus every step of the way, and how quickly He responds to help you when you set your heart upon obedience. When God comes and asks something hard of us — to really forgive that husband three times in one day for the same hurtful offense — we instinctively react, I can’t Lord; you’re asking too much. We may even convince ourselves that God surely doesn’t expect us to forgive as long as it seems like someone is getting away with what they did wrong. But this is not what God says in His Word.

“What has God said about things we think are too difficult to carry out? His grace — his ability residing in us through the Holy Spirit — is sufficient, is enough for us.

“Jesus himself relied totally upon the Father’s grace to say and do what he did on earth. The gospel of John reveals this most clearly, where numerous times Jesus is quoted as saying something like:

“I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

John 5:19, NIV

“How incredible it is for the Son of God to say, ‘The Son can do nothing by himself.’!”

Jesus needed a savior anointing. You aren’t called to save the world, but you are called to walk with God and express His values and character to your family, colleagues and friends. You need the grace/power/ability of God just be the man or woman He designed. You need the anointing to be a caregiver, a parent, a spouse, a wise teacher, a skilled worker, an effective anything.

The Apostle Paul wrote:

I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ…

Ephesians 3:7-8 (NIV)

He wasn’t saying that I, the great Paul needed God’s power to preach the gospel, but that I, the least qualified guy in the world, was given the ability to do the task God gave me.

God’s grace and power are needed and available for everything you are called to do for the Lord. You need the anointing of the Spirit for your ordinary self in your ordinary job on ordinary days. Never doubt that the Spirit’s grace flows to your need at the kitchen sink every bit as powerfully as it does to the healer, the preacher, the teacher and the evangelist.
